Sounder is a film set in the regions around our very own Buena Vista and reflects a historical snapshot of Appalachian life in the depression of the 1930’s. It portrays some challenging subjects for young viewers, such as racism (including racial slurs), violence, poverty, and death. While we feel these subjects are handled with respect and are valuable to a greater understanding of our mutual past, we recommend that parents carefully consider whether it is appropriate for their children to view. As part of Mountain Day weekend, we are excited to bring you this classic movie that captures life in Appalachia during the 1930's.
Based on William H. Armstrong's Newberry Award winning novel, Sounder has been a staple of children's literature since 1969. This adaptation aired on the Wonderful World of Disney in 2003.
We are pleased to welcome local Appalachian expert and professor of history Susan Mead to introduce the movie. She will also talk about the collection of original illustrations from the first publication that will be on display throughout Mountain Day weekend at Art on Magnolia, just down the street from Straws.
